Medical Questions » Histoplasmosis
Name: Histoplasmosis |
Also known as: |
An uncommon fungal infection of the lungs. |
Causes of Histoplasmosis Caused by the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum which is present in soil and can be inhaled to cause a form of pneumonia. Most cases are very mild and may pass unnoticed or cause mild flu-like symptoms. Sometimes a moderately severe lung infection may develop, and in rare cases a severe and fatal pneumonia occurs. Most common in south-east Asia, South America and Africa. It is very rare in developed countries. |
Symptoms of Histoplasmosis Depends on the severity of the infection but in severe cases resemble those of a normal pneumonia with a cough, wheeze, shortness of breath, marked tiredness and a fever. |
Tests for Histoplasmosis Diagnosed after examining a sample of sputum and culturing it to determine the infecting organism. There is also a specific blood test, and X-rays of the chest show a characteristic pattern. |
Treatment for Histoplasmosis Minor cases require no treatment, but more severe ones are treated with specific anti fungal medications.
|
Complications of Histoplasmosis of its treatment Permanent lung damage from severe pneumonia may be permanent. |
Likely Outcome of Histoplasmosis With correct treatment, only the elderly or invalids are likely to die or develop long-term complications. |
