A form of cancer of the lymph nodes. The group of lymphomas that do not fulfil all the criteria to be called Hodgkin' s disease are called ' non Hodgkin' s lymphomas' .
Causes of Hodgkin' s Disease
Unknown. Tends to occur more in males, young adults and the elderly. There may be a genetic tendency.
Symptoms of Hodgkin' s Disease
Painless swellings of the lymph nodes, often in the neck, armpit and groin. Other symptoms include tiredness, fever, weight loss, night sweats and a generalized itch.
Tests for Hodgkin' s Disease
Diagnosis confirmed by removing an involved lymph node and examining it under a microscope.
Treatment for Hodgkin' s Disease
Most patients can be classified into different stages (1 to 4) depending upon the degree of spread of the disease. The treatment varies depending on the stage of the disease and involves various combination of radiation, cytotoxic (anti-cancer) drugs, and surgery.
Complications of Hodgkin' s Disease of its treatment
Spreads to other lymph nodes and organs in other parts of the body.
Likely Outcome of Hodgkin' s Disease
Survival depends upon the staging. The higher the staging the worse the outcome.
