Humerus Fracture

Medical Questions » Humerus Fracture
Name: Humerus Fracture
Also known as:
A fracture of the upper arm bone (humerus), usually near the shoulder joint.
Causes of Humerus Fracture
Severe injury, but in the elderly may occur after a relatively minor fall or twisting force.
Symptoms of Humerus Fracture
Severe pain and swelling at the site of the fracture, with inability to move the arm.
Tests for Humerus Fracture
Diagnosed by X-ray.
Treatment for Humerus Fracture
It is not practical to immobilize the humerus because it would require a plaster that encased the chest and shoulder, and extended down the arm to the elbow. Most heal very well if the arm is left hanging by the side while the wrist is supported by a sling. Sometimes the elbow is strapped to the body. No attempt should be made to use the arm.
Complications of Humerus Fracture of its treatment
A false joint may form at the site of the fracture in the elderly with poor healing, or with excessive use of the arm during healing.
Likely Outcome of Humerus Fracture
Good in most cases, with healing in 6 to 8 weeks, but in the elderly, healing may be slow and painful.
