Uncommon kidney disorder in which blood levels of potassium and sodium are abnormal.
Causes of Hypoaldosteronism
Numerous diseases may be responsible (eg. diabetes mellitus), may be inherited, a side effect of drugs (eg. heparin), occur after severe blood loss in an injury, as a result of brain diseases affecting the pituitary gland, after surgery for a tumor of the adrenal glands (which sit on top of each kidney), or may occur spontaneously for no obvious reason.
Symptoms of Hypoaldosteronism
Abnormal urine production and fluid retention.
Tests for Hypoaldosteronism
Blood tests show high potassium levels, and other abnormalities of body chemistry.
Treatment for Hypoaldosteronism
Specific types of steroids are given long term, and a low salt diet.
