Hypothyroidism

Medical Questions » Hypothyroidism
Name: Hypothyroidism
Also known as: Myxoedema
Underactivity of the thyroid gland which sits in the front of the neck and is responsible for secreting a hormone called thyroxine. This acts as the accelerator for every cell in the body. If the level of thyroxine is high, the cells function at an increased rate if the level of thyroxine is low, the cells function at a less than normal rate. In children, hypothyroidism causes cretinism (see separate entry).
Causes of Hypothyroidism
The thyroid gland tends to fail with advancing age, particularly in women. Less commonly, cysts or tumors may destroy the gland tissue.
Symptoms of Hypothyroidism
Tiredness, weakness, muscle cramps, constipation, dry skin, headaches, nervousness, an intolerance to cold weather and a hoarse voice. In more severe cases additional symptoms may include thinning of the hair, brittle nails, weight gain, shortness of breath, a thick tongue and a slow heart rate. The drop in thyroxine levels is usually gradual over many years and the symptoms may be overlooked until the disease is quite advanced. May also be associated with an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter).
Tests for Hypothyroidism
Diagnosed by blood tests that measures the amount of thyroxine, and other thyroid-related substances.
Treatment for Hypothyroidism
Thyroxine tablets are taken long term to replace that not being produced by the gland.
Complications of Hypothyroidism of its treatment
Untreated, there is an increased risk of developing severe infections and heart failure.
Likely Outcome of Hypothyroidism
Patients usually notice a remarkable improvement in their quality of life as the thyroxine replacement tablets start to work. With adequate treatment the patient should lead a normal active life. Untreated, premature death will occur.
