Incisional Hernia

Medical Questions » Incisional Hernia
Name: Incisional Hernia
Also known as:
In older, obese or debilitated people, the deeper tissue may break down after an operation on the belly, allowing part of the bowel to escape through the deeper layers of the wound to the area just under the skin to cause an incisional hernia.
Causes of Incisional Hernia
A wound infection may be responsible, but often the deeper tissue gives way after a fit of coughing or under the strain of supporting the belly after an operation.
Symptoms of Incisional Hernia
A lump under the skin of the belly. Other symptoms are usually minimal, but sometimes intermittent discomfort, and rarely pain at the site of the hernia may occur.
Tests for Incisional Hernia
None normally necessary.
Treatment for Incisional Hernia
A corset is usually all that is required to control the hernia. In other circumstances, further surgery, often with insertion of some surgical mesh to strengthen the area, will be required.
Complications of Incisional Hernia of its treatment
Rarely, intestine may become caught and twisted in the hernia, causing severe pain, and eventually gangrene of the intestine.
Likely Outcome of Incisional Hernia
Most cause no serious problem, but may be annoying. There is a significant risk of recurrence after further surgical repair.
