Causes of Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca Commonly occurs in elderly women whose lacrimal (tear producing) glands fail. Also a complication of autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren syndrome (see separate entries). |
Symptoms of Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca Continued eye irritation and discomfort from a dry eye surface. |
Tests for Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca A thin strip of blotting paper touched to the lower eye surface for a minute remains abnormally dry. |
Treatment for Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca Very regular, and long term use of lubricating drops and ointment in the eye. Inserts that are placed under the lower lid and ooze a lubricant constantly for many hours can also be used.
