An extremely contagious form of viral hemorrhagic fever (viral infection of the blood) that occurs in central and west Africa.
Causes of Lassa Fever
The virus is spread by rats and from person to person in conditions of poor hygiene. Outbreaks have occurred in Sierra Leone, Nigeria and the Congo. More common in women.
Symptoms of Lassa Fever
Muscle pains, headache, sore throat, joint pains, diarrhea, vomiting, red eyes and abnormal bleeding.
Tests for Lassa Fever
Blood tests show significant abnormalities.
Treatment for Lassa Fever
No cure or vaccine for prevention, but a number of drugs are being used experimentally to modify the disease. Patients must be nursed in strict isolation.
Complications of Lassa Fever of its treatment
Internal bleeding causes death.
Likely Outcome of Lassa Fever
Fatal in about 90% of patients.
