| Name: Mastitis |
| Also known as: Breast Infection |
| An infection of the breast tissue, almost invariably in a breastfeeding woman. |
Causes of Mastitis Bacterial invasion of the breast in a lactating mother that usually occurs if one of the many lobes in the breast does not adequately empty its milk. May spread from a sore, cracked nipple. Women nursing for the first time are more frequently affected. |
Symptoms of Mastitis The breast becomes painful, very tender, red and sore. The woman may become feverish, and quite unwell. |
Tests for Mastitis None normally necessary. |
Treatment for Mastitis Antibiotic tablets such as penicillin or a cephalosporin. In recurrent cases, bromocriptine may be used to stop or reduce breast milk production. If an abscess forms, an operation to drain away the accumulated pus is necessary.
|
Complications of Mastitis of its treatment An abscess may form in the infected lobe of the breast. |
Likely Outcome of Mastitis Usually settles rapidly with correct treatment, and the woman can continue breast feeding. |
