Numerous different fungi that are normally found in the soil enter minor skin wounds on the feet of people in tropical areas who go about barefoot.
Symptoms of Mycetoma
Firm, painless lumps under the skin of the foot that eventually break down into persistent discharging sores. The surrounding skin becomes very thickened.
Tests for Mycetoma
Swabs from the sores identify the responsible fungi.
Treatment for Mycetoma
Antifungal medications for a long time, and sometimes surgery to cut away affected tissue.
Complications of Mycetoma of its treatment
May spread into the bones of the foot causing deformity.
Likely Outcome of Mycetoma
Cured by treatment early in the disease, but long lasting cases may be very resistant to treatment.
