Also known as: Idiopathic Myelofibrosis
Uncommon condition in which white blood cell producing bone marrow is replaced by fibrous scar like tissue.
Causes of Myelofibrosis
Unknown in most cases, but may follow a severe infection of the marrow, cancer that spreads to the marrow, or be a complication of a lymphoma (cancer of lymph tissue) or leukemia.
Symptoms of Myelofibrosis
Often none until disease well advanced when a large spleen and liver, and anemia are noticed. Later, night sweats, weight loss and fevers occur.
Tests for Myelofibrosis
Blood cell tests and bone marrow biopsy are abnormal. Bone X-rays may also show marrow damage.
Treatment for Myelofibrosis
None specific.
Complications of Myelofibrosis of its treatment
Fluid accumulation in the belly, bone overgrowth and nerve pinching, severe infections that do not respond to antibiotics, lymphatic cancers, leukemia and destruction of the body' s immune system.
Likely Outcome of Myelofibrosis
Average survival time of five years from time of diagnosis.
