Causes of Oesophageal Cancer
Excess alcohol (particularly whisky) consumption, smoking, eating very large quantities of pickled vegetables, maize overcooked in iron pots and persistent reflux of stomach acid are known risk factors. Uncommon in western society, but relatively common in central Asia and southern Africa.
Symptoms of Oesophageal Cancer
Difficulty and pain with swallowing that steadily worsens, and weight loss.
Tests for Oesophageal Cancer
Diagnosed by oesophagoscopy (passing a flexible tube into the oesophagus) or a barium swallow X-ray.
Treatment for Oesophageal Cancer
Radical surgery to remove the cancer.
Complications of Oesophageal Cancer of its treatment
Food that the patient attempts to swallow may be vomited and inhaled, causing pneumonia.
Likely Outcome of Oesophageal Cancer
Very poor with 5% surviving five years.
