Infection of the nail bed (pink tissue under a nail) and surrounding tissues.
Causes of Paronychia
An ingrown nail, damage to the side and base of the nail from habitually picking at the area, working in water, working with chemicals (eg. detergents and soaps), dermatitis, and gardening when particles of dirt may be pushed between nail and skin.
Symptoms of Paronychia
Red, tender, painful swelling at the side and base of the nail.
Tests for Paronychia
None necessary.
Treatment for Paronychia
Applying antibiotic ointment to the infected skin around the nail, taking antibiotic tablets, and if an abscess is present, having it lanced to drain pus.
Complications of Paronychia of its treatment
If not treated, infected tissue can break down to form an abscess, which may damage the nail bed and cause the nail to come off.
Likely Outcome of Paronychia
Most settle quickly with treatment.
