Causes of Pellagra
Lack of niacin (vitamin B3) in the diet. Niacin is essential for the normal functioning of the body, and is found in many foods including rice, meats, vegetables and dairy products. Occurs in countries where the diet is primarily corn, which has minimal amounts of niacin.
Symptoms of Pellagra
In the early stages patients have a poor appetite, general weakness, irritability, sore mouth and weight loss. More advanced cases develop dermatitis, diarrhoea, and become demented.
Tests for Pellagra
Diagnosis can be confirmed by blood tests.
Treatment for Pellagra
Vitamin B supplements by mouth.
Complications of Pellagra of its treatment
Severe psychiatric disturbances in advanced cases.
Likely Outcome of Pellagra
Easily cured by vitamin supplements. If left untreated, death will eventually occur.
