Infection of a hair follicle on or between the buttocks.
Causes of Pilonidal Sinus
Hair is found all over the body, except on the palms and soles. Every hair follicle is supplied with a gland that secrete a thick, viscous oil. If the hair follicle becomes clogged with oil, it may become infected. More common in hairy men who sit all day at work (eg. truck drivers). Waxing the hairs will aggravate the situation by damaging the hair follicles.
Symptoms of Pilonidal Sinus
A painful infection that rapidly develops into an abscess.
Tests for Pilonidal Sinus
None necessary.
Treatment for Pilonidal Sinus
Antibiotic tablets and surgical drainage of the abscess. Long term antibiotics, may be necessary in some patients to prevent recurrences.
Complications of Pilonidal Sinus of its treatment
Severe abscesses may require significant surgery to remove a large area of surrounding tissue.
Likely Outcome of Pilonidal Sinus
Generally good, although recurrences common.
