Repetitive Strain Injury

Medical Questions » Repetitive Strain Injury
Name: Repetitive Strain Injury
Also known as: Occupational Overuse Syndrome; RSI
A controversial diagnosis as the symptoms are almost invariably due to a condition such as tenosynovitis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, synovitis or a combination of these.
Causes of Repetitive Strain Injury
Tends to occur in those undertaking repetitive tasks such as typing, playing the piano, or working on a production line.
Symptoms of Repetitive Strain Injury
Pain, swelling and stiffness of the wrist, elbow or the small joints in the hand. The pain may actually be worse while the patient is at rest and immediately upon returning to work after a break.
Tests for Repetitive Strain Injury
No specific tests, but diagnosis only made after all other possible conditions have been excluded by X-ray and other investigations.
Treatment for Repetitive Strain Injury
Resting the affected joint in a splint for a short time, altering the type of work undertaken, physiotherapy, alternating heat and cold to the area, and anti-inflammatory medications. A prolonged rest such as a holiday often settles the disorder.
Complications of Repetitive Strain Injury of its treatment
May result in long-term stiffness, pain, and limited joint movement.
Likely Outcome of Repetitive Strain Injury
Some cases become chronic while others resolve completely after treatment.
