Thrombosis

Medical Questions » Thrombosis
Name: Thrombosis
Also known as:
A thrombus occurs when blood clots inside a vein or artery, partially or completely blocking it. Blood vessels in any part of the body may be involved.
Causes of Thrombosis
An injury, prolonged immobility, hardening of the arteries from cholesterol deposits (atherosclerosis), smoking, cancer, major surgery and a number of rarer conditions.
Symptoms of Thrombosis
Pain at the site of the thrombus, and other symptoms depending on blood vessel affected.
Tests for Thrombosis
Blood tests can demonstrate the presence of a thrombus somewhere in the body, but not its location. Sophisticated X-rays, ultrasound and CT scans are used to find the blood clot.
Treatment for Thrombosis
Depends on site and severity, but generally anticoagulant medication (eg. warfarin, heparin) is given to prevent both the spread of the thrombus and the formation of new clots.
Complications of Thrombosis of its treatment
If a thrombus occurs in an artery supplying the heart muscle a heart attack occurs, in the brain a stroke, and in the lung a pulmonary embolism.
Likely Outcome of Thrombosis
Depends on site and size of thrombus.
