Thyroid Cancer

Medical Questions » Thyroid Cancer
Name: Thyroid Cancer
Also known as:
Any of several different types of cancer of the thyroid gland, which sits in the front of the neck between the Adam' s apple and the top of the breast bone, and produces hormones that control the metabolic rate of the body.
Causes of Thyroid Cancer
Unknown, but more common in elderly women. Cancers may also spread from other organs to the thyroid.
Symptoms of Thyroid Cancer
Usually felt as a painless lump in the gland that steadily enlarges. It does not normally interfere with the workings of the gland until it is very advanced, and there are no other symptoms in the early stages. Any hard lump in the thyroid gland is considered to be a cancer until proved otherwise.
Tests for Thyroid Cancer
The proof usually involves scanning the thyroid gland with radioactive iodine, an ultrasound scan, taking a biopsy of the lump, or removing the lump surgically. It cannot be detected by a blood test.
Treatment for Thyroid Cancer
Surgery to remove the gland. Irradiation and cytotoxic drugs may be added in some cases.
Complications of Thyroid Cancer of its treatment
May spread to surrounding lymph nodes, bone, liver and other organs.
Likely Outcome of Thyroid Cancer
Several different types of cancer occur in the thyroid, and outcome will depend upon the type present. Ana plastic carcinoma of the thyroid has the worst prognosis and usually proceeds rapidly to death, while papillary tumors are rarely fatal.
