Also known as:
Inflammation of the urethra (tube draining urine from bladder to outside) in women.
Causes of Urethral Syndrome
May be due to unidentified bacterial infection (eg. Ureaplasma urealyticum), interstitial cystitis, trigonitis, bladder tumors or bladder prolapse into vagina.
Symptoms of Urethral Syndrome
Pain when passing urine and passing urine very frequently. No bacterial infection can usually be found.
Tests for Urethral Syndrome
Urine tests completely normal, but cystoscopy (passing a thin examining tube through the urethra into the bladder) may show inflammation.
Treatment for Urethral Syndrome
Often unsatisfactory. Antibiotics, mixtures to make urine alkaline and bladder irrigation with antiseptic solution can be tried. Prevented by passing urine after sex.
Complications of Urethral Syndrome of its treatment
None significant.
Likely Outcome of Urethral Syndrome
Often persistent, but settles eventually.
