Most cases are mild, and patients experience nose bleeds, heavy periods, bleeding gums and bleeding into the gut. Excessive bleeding also occurs with any cut or surgery and is dramatically worsened by aspirin.

Diagnosis confirmed by appropriate blood tests.
Treatment for von Willebrand' s Disease
None required in the majority of patients, but aspirin must be avoided. An injection of a blood extract that contains the missing factors is given before surgery and to those who experience excessive bleeding from a severe case of the disease.

Bleeding into joints may cause premature arthritis.
