Causes of Whipple' s Disease Obstruction of the lymphatic ducts draining the small intestine and persistent bacterial infection of the gut. |
Symptoms of Whipple' s Disease Joint and belly pain, diarrhoea, weight loss and a slight fever. Patients may also have increased pigmentation of the skin and enlarged lymph nodes. |
Tests for Whipple' s Disease Faeces examination shows the presence of excess fat, and small bowel X-rays are abnormal. Diagnosed by a biopsy of the small intestine. |
Treatment for Whipple' s Disease Long term antibiotics (eg. sulfas).

Complications of Whipple' s Disease of its treatment Heart failure, uveitis (eye inflammation), confusion, memory loss and abnormal eye movements. |
Likely Outcome of Whipple' s Disease No cure, but most cases controlled by treatment. |
