Causes of Yaws
The Treponema pallidum bacterium is responsible, which is the same bacteria that causes syphilis. Transmitted from one person to another by close contact and poor personal cleanliness.
Symptoms of Yaws
Sores on the skin and in the nose and mouth, and inflamed lymph nodes in the armpits and groin.

Diagnosed by taking swabs from sores.
Treatment for Yaws
Antibiotics (eg. penicillin) and improved personal hygiene.

Sores may become large, ulcerate, penetrate to the bone and cause permanent disfigurement.
