Causes of Yellow Nail Syndrome
Poor blood and oxygen supply to nails. Chronic bronchitis and bronchiectasis often responsible.
Symptoms of Yellow Nail Syndrome
Long term lung disease and/or lymphoedema (hard swelling of a limb) causes nails to stop growing and become thick and yellow, with excessive side to side curvature of nail, no cuticle (white half moon at base), and swelling and redness of skin fold at base of nail.
Tests for Yellow Nail Syndrome
Investigate cause.
Treatment for Yellow Nail Syndrome
Treat underlying lung problem or lymphoedema. Apply azelaic acid to nail. Take vitamin E and zinc supplements.
Complications of Yellow Nail Syndrome of its treatment
Nails drop off and do not regrow.
Likely Outcome of Yellow Nail Syndrome
Very little chance of nails recovering.
