Question:I always seem to get headaches when I take multivitamin supplements. Any idea why this might be?
Answer:You are obviously reacting to something in your multivitamin. Try this experiment. Take 1g of vitamin C for four days, then add an antioxidant supplement. If you have no headaches, you' ve eliminated A, C, E and some other possibilities. (Reactions to sources of vitamin A, C and E are very rare.) Then try a B complex. If that triggers the headache, check that it' s yeast-free. If it isn' t, it may be prompting an allergic reaction. The supplements I recommend are yeast-free since studies show that as many as 20 per cent of people react to either brewer' s or baker' s yeast.

Some people are genetically pre-programmed to produce more of the neurotransmitter histamine. This condition can make them prone to headaches in the first place; but supplementing extra folic acid (as found in a B complex) can actually make them worse because folate promotes histamine production. So try cutting out folic acid and see how you feel.
