Question:I have frequent painful cramping spasms in my right foot and right hand, is this arthritis? I am 67.
Answer:Muscle cramps in the small muscles of the hand and foot are not due to arthritis, but may be caused by poor circulation of blood to the extremities, excessive exetcise and overuse of the muscles, compression of nerves in the arm, leg or back, a lack of thyroid hormone, a lack of salt in the blood and as a side effect of some medications (eg. fluid tablets). You should see your doctor to have tests done to see if there is any significant cause for the problem that can be corrected.
