Atrophic Vaginitis

Medical Questions » Atrophic Vaginitis
Name: Atrophic Vaginitis
Also known as: Post-Menopausal Vaginitis; Senile Vaginitis
A lack of vaginal moisture and lubrication. The vagina is kept moist by the production of a mucus from glands in and around it, that become more active during sexual stimulation.
Causes of Atrophic Vaginitis
After the menopause, the female hormone o estrogen is no longer produced by the ovaries. This hormone stimulates the vaginal glands to produce mucus, but without o estrogen, they do not function.
Symptoms of Atrophic Vaginitis
Older women complain of a dry, sore, itchy vagina.
Tests for Atrophic Vaginitis
INVESTIGATIONS: Blood tests can measure o estrogen level.
Treatment for Atrophic Vaginitis
Simple moisturizing creams can be applied when the vagina is irritated, but give only temporary relief. Best solution is to replace the missing o estrogen long term by using a vaginal cream once or twice a week, oestrogen tablets daily, skin patches once or twice a week, or implants every few months. Dosages must be slowly adjusted to suit each individual woman.
Complications of Atrophic Vaginitis of its treatment
Ulceration and bacterial infection of the vagina. Increased risk of prolapse (see separate entry).
Likely Outcome of Atrophic Vaginitis
Good results from treatment.
