Causes of Barlow Syndrome May be genetic. Mitral valve between the small (atrium) and large chambers (ventricle) on the left side of the heart slips out of place (prolapses). |
Symptoms of Barlow Syndrome Sometimes no symptoms, but may cause an irregular heart rhythm, fainting and transient ischaemic attacks (see separate entry). |
Tests for Barlow Syndrome Diagnosed by hearing characteristic abnormal heart sound and echocardiography (form of ultrasound scan). |
Treatment for Barlow Syndrome No treatment necessary if no symptoms. Beta-blocker tablets for mild symptoms. Surgical repair of valve if severe. Antibiotic cover to prevent endocarditis.

Complications of Barlow Syndrome of its treatment Endocarditis (internal heart infection) may occur with any dental procedure or other infection. Antibiotics are taken to prevent this. |
