Also known as:
An organism that is widespread in every part of the world, and normally lives in humans without causing any symptoms. Only in cases where there is a very heavy infestation, the patient is particularly sensitive to the organism, or the patient has a deficient immune system (eg. AIDS) do symptoms occur.
Causes of Blastocystis
A microscopic animal (protozoan) that infests the intestine. Spreads from person to person by a wide range of intermediates that include everything from the house fly to the earth worm, as well as other animals and humans.
Symptoms of Blastocystis
Often no symptoms, but when they occur patients develop diarrhea, belly pains, nausea and loss of appetite.
Tests for Blastocystis
Diagnosis can be made by examining a sample of faces under a microscope.
Treatment for Blastocystis
Often none necessary, but if required, the antibiotic metronidazole is used.
Complications of Blastocystis of its treatment
Rarely an infestation of the lungs may occur.
Likely Outcome of Blastocystis
Normally self limiting and settles in a few days. Treatment will clear the organism from the gut.
