| An organism that is widespread in every part of the world, and normally lives in humans without causing any symptoms. Only in cases where there is a very heavy infestation, the patient is particularly sensitive to the organism, or the patient has a deficient immune system (eg. AIDS) do symptoms occur. |
Causes of Blastocystis A microscopic animal (protozoan) that infests the intestine. Spreads from person to person by a wide range of intermediates that include everything from the house fly to the earth worm, as well as other animals and humans. |
Symptoms of Blastocystis Often no symptoms, but when they occur patients develop diarrhea, belly pains, nausea and loss of appetite. |
Tests for Blastocystis Diagnosis can be made by examining a sample of faces under a microscope. |
Treatment for Blastocystis Often none necessary, but if required, the antibiotic metronidazole is used.

Complications of Blastocystis of its treatment Rarely an infestation of the lungs may occur. |
Likely Outcome of Blastocystis Normally self limiting and settles in a few days. Treatment will clear the organism from the gut. |
