Bone Cancer

Medical Questions » Bone Cancer
Name: Bone Cancer
Also known as:
Cancer affecting any bone in the body. There are many different forms depending on which bone cell types are involved, including osteomas, fibrosarcoma, enchondroma (start in cartilage), chondrosarcoma, osteoclastoma (giant cell tumors), osteosarcoma and Ewing' s tumors. The last two have separate entries in this book.
Causes of Bone Cancer
No known cause. The most common type is that which spreads from cancer in another tissue (metastatic cancer) such as the breast and prostate.
Symptoms of Bone Cancer
Common symptoms are bone pain and swelling, although many types of bone cancer may show no symptoms until the disease is quite advanced. Painful or swollen joints, and limitation of joint movement are also possible.
Tests for Bone Cancer
Diagnosis involves X-rays, CT scans, bone scans, bone biopsy and blood tests.
Treatment for Bone Cancer
Involves a combination of amputation, surgical removal, irradiation and drugs, depending on that exact type of cancer present.
Complications of Bone Cancer of its treatment
Pathological fractures may occur at the site of the fracture because the bone is weakened at that point.
Likely Outcome of Bone Cancer
The outcome is extremely variable, depending on the type of cancer, the stage at which it is diagnosed, the position in the body, the age of the patient and the response to treatment. Metastatic cancers usually have a far poorer outcome than cancers that actually start in the bone.
