Cholesteatoma

Medical Questions » Cholesteatoma
Name: Cholesteatoma
Also known as:
A serious complication of middle ear infections or blockage of the Eustachian tube (runs through the centre of the head from the middle ear to the back of the nose to equalize ear pressure).
Causes of Cholesteatoma
A sac on the ear drum develops which is filled with chronically infected material that antibiotics cannot reach. The infected sac slowly enlarges and eats away surrounding bone, including the fine bones which transmit sound vibrations from the ear drum to the hearing mechanism in the inner ear.
Symptoms of Cholesteatoma
Minimal until the condition is well advanced, when ear discomfort and deafness occur.
Tests for Cholesteatoma
Diagnosed by examining the ear with an otoscope (magnifying light).
Treatment for Cholesteatoma
Surgical removal of the sac of infected material.
Complications of Cholesteatoma of its treatment
If left too long before treatment, permanent deafness may occur.
Likely Outcome of Cholesteatoma
Usually good results from surgery.
