Claudication

Medical Questions » Claudication
Name: Claudication
Also known as:
Term used to describe the pain experienced when blood supply to muscles is inadequate.
Causes of Claudication
Blood supply to leg muscles is reduced below requirements. The arteries to one or both legs may be narrowed by cholesterol deposits (atherosclerosis) and an adequate amount of blood may not get through. Any activity will require extra supplies of oxygen and nutrition, which the narrowed arteries cannot supply.
Symptoms of Claudication
Aching pain in the leg with exercise, particularly climbing slopes or stairs, that eases with rest.
Tests for Claudication
Doppler ultrasound scan will show reduced blood flow in affected arteries.
Treatment for Claudication
Medications to strengthen heart and open arteries. Surgery may be necessary to bypass the blockage.
Complications of Claudication of its treatment
Ulcers may form on skin and be difficult to heal.
Likely Outcome of Claudication
Reasonable results from treatment.
