A relatively common form of thyroid gland inflammation.
Causes of de Quervain' s Thyroiditis
Occurs most commonly in women between 25 and 45 and is thought to be the result of a viral infection.
Symptoms of de Quervain' s Thyroiditis
Painful swelling of the thyroid gland at the front of the neck, pain around the neck to the ears, difficulty in swallowing and symptoms of hyperthyroidism (see separate entry) such as rapid heart rate and excess sweating.
Tests for de Quervain' s Thyroiditis
Diagnosed by blood tests and biopsy of the thyroid gland.
Treatment for de Quervain' s Thyroiditis
There is no specific cure available. Aspirin usually relieves the pain and swelling, and propranolol controls the thyrotoxicosis.
Complications of de Quervain' s Thyroiditis of its treatment
Heart damage from the excess production of thyroid hormone.
Likely Outcome of de Quervain' s Thyroiditis
Satisfactory control usually possible, and settles spontaneously with time.
