Rare complication of Cushing syndrome.
Causes of Nelson Syndrome
Usually follows removal of both adrenal glands (which sit on top of the kidneys) for Cushing syndrome.
Symptoms of Nelson Syndrome
Skin and tongue pigmentation, and enlargement of the pituitary gland under the brain.
Tests for Nelson Syndrome
Skull X-ray and CT scan show the enlarged pituitary gland and blood tests show low levels of vital hormones (eg. Cortisol).
Treatment for Nelson Syndrome
Replacement of many different hormones by tablets or injection.
Complications of Nelson Syndrome of its treatment
Enlarging pituitary gland may put pressure on the optic nerve from the eye to cause partial visual field loss.
Likely Outcome of Nelson Syndrome
Reasonably good.
