| During pregnancy, the fetus is surrounded by amniotic fluid in the uterus. The fluid protects it from bumps and jarring and removes waste. Oligohydramnios occurs if inadequate fluid is present. |
Causes of Oligohydramnios May be due to abnormal development of the fetus, or abnormal placental function, but in most cases there is no obvious cause. |
Symptoms of Oligohydramnios Normally there is about a 1000 mLs. of amniotic fluid present at birth. A volume less than 200 mLs. occurs in oligohydramnios. |
Tests for Oligohydramnios Diagnosed by an ultrasound scan. Further investigations to determine the cause of the condition must follow. |
Treatment for Oligohydramnios Depend upon the cause, but often none is necessary or possible.
