Autoimmune (inappropriate rejection of normal body tissue) damage to multiple hormone secreting glands in the body. Three different types have been identified.
Causes of Polyglandular Autoimmune Syndromes
All types are inherited, but with type 1 both parents must carry the abnormal gene, while with types 2 and 3 only one parent needs to be a carrier.
Symptoms of Polyglandular Autoimmune Syndromes
Type 1: Child with thrush (fungal infection) in the mouth, under active parathyroid glands in the neck and under active adrenal glands (sit on top of each kidney). Some patients may have loss of body hair, underdeveloped genitals and an under active thyroid gland. Type 2: Adult with under active adrenal glands, autoimmune thyroid gland disease and insulin dependent diabetes. Some patients may have underdeveloped genitals, myasthenia gravies and vitiligo. Type 3: Adult with autoimmune thyroid disease and insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, OR under active adrenal glands and Hashimoto' s thyroiditis.
