Cancer of the stomach.
Causes of Stomach Cancer
One of the less common cancers in Europeans (4% of all cancers), but very common amongst Japanese. More than twice as common in men than women, and usually occurs over the age of 60 years. The consumption of green and yellow vegetables decreases the risk, but it rises in lower socioeconomic groups and in those who have pernicious anemia.
Symptoms of Stomach Cancer
Often has mild symptoms such as indigestion and heartburn, so patients frequently do not attend a doctor until it is quite advanced. Other symptoms include burping, feeling very full in the upper belly, nausea, weight loss and a loss in appetite. Vomiting blood and passing black faeces are late complications.
Tests for Stomach Cancer
Confirmed by gastroscopy and biopsy of any suspicious areas. Stomach cancer often looks like, and may be confused with, an ulcer.
Treatment for Stomach Cancer
Surgical removal of the stomach, and surrounding lymph nodes to which the cancer may have spread. Irradiation may be used as additional treatment.
Complications of Stomach Cancer of its treatment
The liver is a common site for the spread of the cancer, but once this is involved, a cure is most unlikely.
Likely Outcome of Stomach Cancer
The five-year survival rate is about 20%.
