Vaginal infection by any of a number of different bacteria.
Causes of Vaginitis, Bacterial
Bacteria such as Gardnerella vaginalis, which is slightly unusual in that it requires an oxygen-free and alkaline environment. The upper end of the vagina can be oxygen-free, but is normally slightly acid. It may become alkaline with semen after sex, changing sexual partners, hormonal changes atdifferent times of the month, and using antibiotics.
Symptoms of Vaginitis, Bacterial
A grayish fish-smelling vaginal discharge, soreness and redness.
Tests for Vaginitis, Bacterial
Diagnosis and type of bacteria present determined by taking a swab from the vagina and having it examined and cultured.
Treatment for Vaginitis, Bacterial
Appropriate antibiotic tablets by mouth, antiseptic douches (eg. iodine solution), and acidic gels or creams in the vagina. In recurrent cases the male sexual partner may need to be treated.
Complications of Vaginitis, Bacterial of its treatment
Infection may spread into the uterus and cause pelvic inflammatory disease, or to adjacent glands to cause a Bartholin' s cyst infection.
