Question:Nowadays my kid has started complaining pain in the ear. Can it be ear infection? One of My friends suggested me not to give antibiotics for ear infection. I am confused. Please advice.
Answer:Children with ear infection suffer from fever, are irritable and often complain about the pain in the ear.

Till sometime back, children with ear infection were given antibiotics for treatment. But, recent studies reveal that not all children need antibiotics for their treatment. A lot of children with ear infections may get better without antibiotics, without any adverse effects. This is called the observation option.

According to this, kids below six months of age should necessarily be treated with antibiotics, when they have ear infection. The children between six months and two years of age are also needed be treated with antibiotics, if the pediatrician recommends it or if the infection is severe. Kids above 2 years generally don' t required antibiotics unless they are having severe symptoms of ear infection.

This concept limits the use of antibiotics and the child' s unwanted exposure to side effects of antibiotics. It helps the child in developing a strong immune system discarding unnecessary use of antibiotics.

So, you must consult a doctor about your kid' s condition whether he should be given antibiotics or not.
