Question:What causes pronounced vertical ridges in both fingernails and toenails?
Answer:The vertical ridges in your nails can indicate a deficiency of B vitamins. Many foods are rich in the Bs, but these vitamins can be removed by processing and refining (of grains, for example), and are depleted in the body by stress and alcohol. Consequently many people today are not getting enough. In addition to a good multivitamin and mineral, I' d recommend a B complex supplement of 50mg with breakfast and dinner. Also reduce your alcohol intake and stress levels (yoga, walking and just chilling out will help, as well as laying off stimulants such as coffee), and eat plenty of vitamin B-rich foods (wholegrains, brewer' s yeast, lentils, and most vegetables — watercress, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and tomatoes are good sources).
