Question:What should a patient do if not happy with the treatment given by their doctor?
Answer:The first thing to do is let the doctor concerned know. It may be a little daunting to confront the doctor, but it is to the benefit of both doctor and patient if this occurs. Quite often it is a simple misunderstanding, or the patient may have expected a form of treatment that was not appropriate. If necessary, write down a list of problems to take to the consultation, or if the patient is far too anxious to see the doctor in person, write him/her a letter. Only as a last resort, if no satisfaction is obtained on a subsequent visit, should the patient approach the Health Complaints Commissioner in their state, as the patient may be left with a completely unwarranted distrust of a doctor, or worse still, all doctors.
