Question:I have a painful problem—a spur under my left heel. I have had three cortisone injections, which help for a few months, but my doctor says it is not safe to give more. What else can be done to help me?
Answer:The treatment of heel spurs involves the use of pain-killers, heat, antiinflammatory medications (on prescription from your doctor), physiotherapy, steroid injections, or as a last resort, an operation to remove the spur. Steroid injections are often very effective, but if used too frequently, can actually damage the surrounding tissue. The operation is fiddly and not particularly easy or comfortable, but is usually successful, although a very small number of patients continue to have pain or develop a recurrence of the spur.
