Question:I have protein in my urine. My doctor keeps testing the urine, but does nothing. What could cause this?
Answer:Protein in the urine can be due to any one of several dozen reasons, some of which are not of any concern, while others are very serious. I would hope that your doctor, or another doctor, has performed detailed investigations in the past to exclude any serious disease such as infection, nephritis, high blood pressure or a tumour. If these tests are negative, it may be that you have a mild degree of kidney failure, which is very common in older people, and he may just be checking the urine regularly to make sure it does not get any worse. If the amount of protein in the urine increased, he would then undertake further treatment. Another possibility is that you have had protein in your urine since birth. This congenital problem is of no consequence, provided it does not worsen.
