Question:I cough up pale yellow to green coloured phlegm during the day. Could this be serious? My doctor says it is Pseudomonas infection, but as I am allergic to Gentamicin, he hasn' t given me any treatment.
Answer:A Pseudomonas infection is certainly serious, and can produce yellow to green phlegm. Pseudomonas is the name of a bacteria that causes bronchitis and pneumonia. If it is left untreated, it can cause permanent lung damage, and chronic poor health. You should return to your doctor and ask for sputum cultures to be taken to determine which antibiotic is appropriate to kill the infection. Gentamicin is commonly used to treat this type of infection, but there are others available. If necessary, your degree of reaction to Gentamicin may need to be tested again. If your own GP is unable to help you further, you should request referral to a respiratory physician. These are doctors who are specialists in lung diseases.
