Question:What are antihistamines? I see some cold remedies boast that they don' t have them, but my doctor told me to get some for a cold. What is best?
Answer:Antihistamines are a group of drugs that control allergic reactions, dry up phlegm, stop itching, and relieve watery eyes. All can be purchased without a prescription. Most of them cause drowsiness to some extent, but this varies greatly from one person to another. This is why some preparations label their product to be free of antihistamine. Non-sedating antihistamines ate now available, but are more expensive than the older ones. Alcohol must be avoided, and care taken if opetating machinery or driving.
