Question:I have trouble with ingrown hairs on the neck below my jaw that cause redness and pimples. I have been told that this is caused by shaving with the grain and I should shave against the grain. Is it OK to shave against the grain on the neck?
Answer:I am not aware of any specific problems in shaving with or against the grain (the way the hairs lie naturally on the skin), except for a slight discomfort. If you find that shaving against the grain on the neck prevents your ingrown hair problem, then this is naturally the way to proceed. If you continue to have this problem, using one of the anti-pimple creams or lotions that teenagers often require can reduce the inflammation in the skin and reduce the problem. These are available without a prescription from chemists. If the problem still persists, mild steroid lotions or creams can be prescribed by your general practitioner to further reduce the inflammation in the skin.
