Question:Is circumcision necessary to be able to have children?
Answer:Circumcision was a fad in Australia from after the First World War until the 1970s, but is now fading away, and less than 20% of Australian boys are now circumcised. It is certainly not necessary to father children, and is not necessary for the sexual or general health of a man. Some cultures and religions use male circumcision as a right of passage or symbol, but there is no more medical reason for circumcising men than women, and female circumcision is considered to be genital mutilation and banned by law in this country. There are a very small number of men who do need to be circumcised for good medical reasons, but there is no need for this to be carried out routinely. Please be reassured that if you are having trouble fathering a child, it will not be because you are uncircumcised.
